The NICE guidance provides recommendations for schools and teachers relating to providing programmes to help develop children's social and emotional skills and wellbeing. identifying and assessing emotional health and wellbeing issues and interventions to support children and families.

 

Measuring and monitoring children and young people’s mental wellbeing: A toolkit for schools and colleges (Public Health England)

This toolkit provides guidance on ‘measuring and monitoring children and young people’s mental wellbeing’.

It discusses what is meant by mental wellbeing, how schools can influence mental health, and why it’s important to measure it in schools. Three aspects of measurement are explored: (1) taking a snapshot, for example, of pupil wellbeing (assessing), (2) identifying, for example, pupils that might need more individual or specialised support, and (3) evaluating the impact of early support and targeted interventions. A broad range of positive mental health and wellbeing instruments are introduced and discussed.

Mental Health at Work - Ten steps towards school staff wellbeing.

Any conversation about supporting children’s wellbeing must also include how we support teachers. This resource encourages schools to reflect on the wellbeing of staff, based on the findings from a large consultation.

 

Supporting mental health and wellbeing in schools: Engaging with all parents and carers

Anna Freud Centre Guidance to explore a range of innovative ways that schools can help children by successfully engaging with parents and carers. It includes tips as well as case studies that show both parents’ and schools’ perspectives. Topics featured include "Building rapport with parents and carers", "Having difficult conversations with parents and carers" and "Managing your feelings".

 
 

Guidance on teaching about mental health and emotional wellbeing through PSHE education was originally produced under a Department for Education grant, and has been fully updated and relaunched in March 2019 to match the government’s new statutory PSHE requirements regarding Health Education, Relationships Education and RSE.

The guidance covers key aspects of teaching about mental health effectively and safely from Key Stage 1-4, including:

- Why it is important to teach about mental health and emotional wellbeing

- Key principles in teaching about mental health and emotional wellbeing safely and confidently

- Building teaching on mental health into a planned PSHE programme

- Addressing challenging mental health issues such as eating disorders, self-harm and suicide
