Healthy Learning, Healthy Lives Network Meeting - February 2019

Updates on Preparing for Statutory RSE, Healthy Eating criteria for Early Years & Be Well @ Work Programme.

Our second Healthy Learning, Healthy Lives (HLHL) Network meeting of this academic year took place on Thursday (28th February 2019).

It was great to have a full room and see some new faces as well as people who are already actively involved in the HLHL programme. Unfortunately we experienced some technical issues and so the wheel demonstration did not take place as planned. If you are still interested in viewing a demonstration of the wheel or if you have had any difficulties using the wheel to upload evidence please get in touch; healthylearning@doncaster.gov.uk  and we can arrange a meeting at a time and place that is convenient for you.

All the presentations and links shared in the meeting are available on the bottom of this page.

We trialled running this meeting in two parts and it was great to see that most people commented that this worked well in their feedback.  If you didn’t complete a feedback form or have any other comments to share please do send them in, feedback form is at the end of the page.

Thank you also to those who completed the Evaluation Questionnaire that Charlotte from RDaSH provided.  The questionnaire is at the end of the page if you have yet not completed it.

A final reminder that if you’re willing and available to take part in a half an hour interview to share your views as part in the evaluation of the HLHL programme to contact RDaSH by email (if you haven’t done so already); rdash.groundedresearch@nhs.net  and Charlotte will arrange to speak to you at a time and venue that suits you.

Information from Ruth Precious (Family& Community Learning Lead) was shared about the Healthy Family Cookery courses that are available and are free to parents and schools.

Kirsty Thorley joined us to talk about the Be Well @ Work Programme, which helps organisations understand and support the health and wellbeing of staff.  The programme offers a range of including free workplace visits, workplace health needs assessment, free training and workshops and the option of accreditation with the Be Well @ Work award.

Upcoming workshops will be exploring the importance of sleep and sessions to raise awareness of how menopause can affect employees. Details of the workshops can be found here.

In the schools section of the meeting updates were shared about the Pupil Lifestyle Survey (PLS); the data collection period for this year’s survey has now closed. The analysis of the responses is now taking place and reports will be provided to schools that took part in the Summer Term.

We recognise that the time frames for this year’s survey were challenging. The survey will be running again in the next academic year (19/20), beginning in the Autumn Term.

At the last meeting we briefly discussed The Draft Guidance on Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education.  At this meeting we were pleased to have Andy Maddison (Public Health Improvement Coordinator) join us to consider the implications for schools.

This agenda links with and is supported by the PSHE element of the Healthy Learning, Healthy Lives programme. Useful resources for planning and delivering PSHE in schools are available on our website here

Both the PSHE Association and the Sex Education Forum have a number of free resources available in relation to delivery of RSE.  They are all available via the Sex Education Forum website .

Public Health have commissioned the Sex Education Forum to consult and advise on the local approach and as a starting point we are asking teachers to complete a confidential survey to help provide a picture of schools readiness to implement statutory RSE and to identify CPD and support needs. This data will be used to develop a training offer to Doncaster schools.

In the Early Years section of the meeting we focused on the Healthy Eating & Oral Health section of the Healthy Learning, Healthy Lives criteria.

The first criteria relates to the setting having a food policy and we have developed a guide for settings to help them develop/review their policy.

Please see the presentation for guidance on evidence to submit for other criteria in the section.
